Meet a real-life Energy Advisor: Energy savings a breeze for Jeremy Myers

For Jeremy Myers, Energy Advisor at Corn Belt Energy Corp., helping people save money in the energy industry has been a breeze. In his career, he’s installed geothermal systems, owned a Spray Foam insulation business and even worked on a fleet of wind turbines! Now, he’s dispensing energy-saving advice to the Corn Belt Energy members.

How’d you become an Energy Advisor?
I have always had an interest in energy-saving products. Every previous job/career I have had before this was in the energy saving/consumables markets. I always wanted to work for a utility and since I am a Corn Belt member I knew it had to be the right fit.

What’d you do before?
I spent 13 years installing geothermal systems. I primarily ran a drilling rig and installed everything from lake systems to 500-foot commercial wells. I also owned and ran a Spray Foam business insulating homes and businesses around my local area. It was always a part-time business and eventually consumed too much of my free time. For two years I worked as a Wind Technician and worked on a fleet of 100 1.5-megawatt (MW) wind turbines.

What’s the last hobby you picked up?
I have always been an avid hunter but have really started to enjoy camping with my two young children and watching them experience the outdoors.

What’s the best vacation you ever had?
My wife and I went to Alaska for our honeymoon. We spent 10 days traveling all over the state viewing wildlife and taking in the beautiful scenery. The hardest part was adjusting to the lack of sleep; while we were there it was only dark for a few hours every day.

If you could switch lives with a person for one day, who would it be?
I’m a huge baseball fan; I’d love to spend a day in Theo Epstein’s shoes. He is extremely well spoken and seems to always make the right decisions and never wavers under pressure.

In a world without electricity, what would you miss most?
As sad as it may be, I’d have a hard time giving up my phone. I rely on it for everything from my calendar to my alarm clock. Considering I didn’t get my first one until after I graduated high school, I have become dependent like everyone else.

What’s the best thing that happened to you yesterday?
My wife, children and I had a Valentine’s Day party. My daughter is 3 years old so parties are a big deal right now. We grilled steaks and passed out candy and cards to each other. It was a very nice evening without leaving the house.

How’d you change your energy habits at home after you took this job?
We immediately went to LED lighting throughout our home; that was the easy fix. Now we are considering how important our hot tub is to us (not such an easy sell to the Mrs.).

What’s the number one thing members want to know?
Without a doubt it’s how to save money! Members are always willing to listen to new rebates or materials that can save them on their energy bill in the future.

What’s the number one thing you wish they knew?
I think people these days are always hesitant about a good deal. It is hard to let them know I’m not trying to sell them something, and that I’m just attempting to advise and assist with their home efficiency decisions.

If you weren’t an Energy Advisor, what would you be?
I would definitely be an Arborist. I can’t get enough of chainsaws and splitting firewood.
