If you’ve spent much time exploring POWER MOVES®, then you’ve probably figured out we’re all about savings: saving energy, saving money, saving energy (wait, did we mention that one already? What about saving money?).
But sometimes our members get to wondering—isn’t their local electric co-op in the business of selling electricity? And what kind of cockamamie business plan is it to tell people to use less of a product? It would be like Coca-Cola asking you to drink more tap water, or Volkswagen suggesting maybe you take up bicycling. Right?
Wrong. That’s because you’re not a customer of an electric company that answers to shareholders. You’re a member of a nonprofit electric cooperative. That means you call the shots, and your best interests guide our decisions. Especially when it comes to your pocketbook.
We Aren’t Out to Make Money
No, really—as your local electric co-op, our goal isn’t to rake in a big profit to take to the bank. Instead, we focus on providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity. Why? Because as a cooperative, we’re owned by our members (that means you). So we know that when rates go up, it costs you (our owners) money.
One way to help keep electricity as affordable as possible is for us to help you reduce the amount of energy you consume. That’s why your co-op uses their POWER MOVES program to provide so many energy efficiency incentives, and tips on how to use less electricity. We also provide what are known as “capital credits.” If we collect too much money—more than needed to purchase power and operate the business—capital credits are how we give that money back to our members, where it belongs.
By helping you reduce your energy costs, we’re fulfilling one of our fundamental responsibilities as an energy cooperative. We never forget who we answer to.
But We Are Here to Help You Save
Since we’re not worried about making big bucks on the back of your energy bill, that opens up all kinds of opportunities. As that rare kind of company that wants to help you use less of our product, we’ve come up with a few ways to help you save.
Rebates for Homeowners
Your HVAC system and water heater use an awful lot of energy, and can be awfully expensive to replace. Our rebates make it possible to swap them out with newer, more efficient models—without it costing you an arm and a leg.
Incentive Programs for Businesses
If you’re running a business, you know how important it is to keep an eye on your bottom line. By offering incentives to help you with energy saving projects, upgrades, and new construction, you can keep your costs down now and over time.
