Meet a real-life Energy Advisor: T.J. Garner’s habits help Fulton County REMC members

T.J. Garner worked in a school when he noticed the job ad for Energy Advisor at Fulton County REMC. He had routinely always tried to conserve electricity – a habit that came in perfect for his new role helping members reduce their energy use to save money.

How’d you become an Energy Advisor?
I had seen the ad highlighting the position and thought that it would be something I would really enjoy.

What’d you do before?
I was a facility director at a school before I joined Fulton County REMC. Prior to that, I did residential plumbing and heating.

What’s the last hobby you picked up?
Kayaking

What’s the best vacation you ever had?
Any vacation with my daughter and wife.

If you could switch lives with a person for one day, who would it be?
I would probably switch with my 6-year-old daughter. That way I could find out how she has so much energy!

In a world without electricity, what would you miss most?
I would miss my cell phone the most.

How’d you change your energy habits at home after you took this job?
They really did not change much! I have always tried to get the most out of each kilowatt-hour.

What’s the number one thing members want to know?
Members commonly ask why their bill is so high.

What’s the number one thing you wish they knew?
That an electric heater, no matter how cheap a company claims it is to use, is not nearly as efficient as they think it is.

If you weren’t an Energy Advisor, what would you be?
I would probably be working in the heating and air conditioning trade.
