Create a safer, more comfortable space

Make your basement or crawlspace a healthier, safer space in your home.

When you consider how your house operates as a single system, you begin to see how problems in the basement or crawlspace can result in problems through the whole home. But by taking care of these oft-forgotten spaces, you can keep your whole house cleaner and more comfortable.

Project Overview

Tools and Materials:

  • Caulk
  • Insulation

Safety:

  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask/respirator
  1. Inspect your home’s basement or crawlspace with an eye out for things like water (puddles or condensation), air infiltration (cobwebs often form where air is moving), stored chemicals, pests and critters, and other risk factors that could lead to discomfort or health concerns. Think about what you want to share your air with, removing chemicals or pests.
  2. Pay special attention to electrical appliances or combustion appliances, which may pose special risks to your home if not cared for properly. Especially combustion appliances such as gas fired furnaces and water heaters. Signs of rust, or soot on or around your gas fired furnace or water heater are signs that action should be taken. Reach out to your local energy advisor or HVAC contractor.
